They were driving fast and had made several turns.

Blake tried to keep up, to count the minutes that passed before each left, each right.

He’d get back to her, and back to his family. All he had to do was keep track of the movements of the car, then double back and save them. All of them.

But his captors circled, as if heading back, then heading away again.

Another quick left. An easy right. He worked to remember each swerve, but soon lost his sense of direction.

Then they slammed to a stop.

Momentum had no sooner lurched him forward then knocked him back against the seat when they dragged him from the car. His hands still bound behind him. The hood still in place.

Two steps away, he was shoved to his knees.

His handlers were quiet this time, no doubt cautious now that they knew he understood them.

One of the cuffs was loosened, then removed. His free arm painfully twisted behind him as the still-cuffed hand was jerked upward and secured to something new.

“You don’t move for 10 minutes.” The voice was deceptively soft in his ear. “You move. You die.”

Another tug on his twisted arm made him growl in pain, and then he was released with a shove.

He waited, listened past the pounding of his heart to the thud of car doors slamming.

An engine revved. Tires crunched on dirt and pebbles. Then silence surrounded him.

Ten minutes.

Screw them.

They couldn’t kill him. To get their money, they needed him alive.

He ripped the hood from his head, gulped in fresh air and darted his gaze all around. Stunned to realize where they’d taken him.

She had a cabin? Upstate? That tidbit hadn’t been part of the information pack he’d been given about her. “Since when?” he asked.

“Since…years now,” she said. “Not that it’s any of your business.”

He took her challenge in one swallow, digested it a bit, then eased closer to her, impressed by the way she held her ground rather than shrink back from him again.

“What you fail to understand, Ms. Hall, is that while I’m on this case, everything you do or think, everything you’ve done or thought, is my business.” He took another step closer, looked down at her, using whatever presence he had to let her know how serious this was. Or could be. “You asked if I ever failed to keep someone safe.” He forced the flood of memories from his mind, resisted the urge to roll the persistent ache, the permanent reminder, from his shoulder. “The answer is yes.”

She drew back from him. Visibly paled.

He went on. “Because of lies. And secrets.”

Murdered.

She had said the word. Then acted as though she hadn’t.

But it wouldn’t be silenced. Instead, it bounced around in his head, demanding the attention it deserved.

“So keep it in mind, Ms. Hall, in my business, honesty keeps people breathing. Dishonesty snuffs out their lights.”

She stood rod still to the count of four, then nodded slowly as though she finally processed his meaning. “I won’t lie to you.” Her voice was breathy. Her eyes averted from his.

Murdered.

“And your secrets?”
